STRAHAN. Macquarie Harbour and Sarah Island . One of the loneliest and most isolated outpost in Australia . A spectacularly beautiful harbour at the end of the world. This place was invented to be the ultimate penal colony. The 50km long harbour opens to the sea through the narrow, battering waters of Hell's Gates. A very dangerous place due to traitorous waters and only a narrow entrance proving very difficult for boats to pass and impossible to swim through. Before settlement begun in 1815 this was home to many aborigines who are believed to have been in the area for more than 20,000 years. Tragically there were none left by 1830. The area became a popular area for a penal colony for its huon pine. A superb fine grain wood excellent for ship building. It is now a major tourist town for visitors to Tasmania with many activities and accommodation n the area. * Gordon River Cruises. *West Coast Wilderness Railway. * Wild River Jet rides. *Tullah Horseback and Boat tours. *Strahan Marine Charters (fishing trips). *Cove Gallery. * Hogarth Falls . *The ship that never was. * Sarah Island historic site. *Strahan Woodworks. *The Magic Cottage. *Golf. *Wilderness Air. *4 Wheel Motor Bike Tours . *Piners and Miners. *Montezuma Falls Roseberry ( Tasmania 's largest falls) * Lake Pieman .
