EAGLEHAWK NECK. Rich in history and spectacular cliff formations. Eaglehawk neck is made up of a narrow part of land less than 100m wide. Pirates bay on the east and Norfolk bay to the West. Which made this 'the most effective natural prison gates ever invented', and as dangerous and difficult to escape/cross as Alcatraz . Eaglehawk neck was patrolled by guards, day and night, and had 11 big, tethered, wild dogs chained the whole way across the narrow strip forming a barrier. The strong currents and large amount of sharks roaming the waters, made escaping by sea near imposable and very daring. Little remains are left of the convict history in the area, but with its remarkable, breath taking natural wonders; it's an absolute must for people traveling to Tasmania . *Devils Kitchen (free lookout) *Tasman's Arch (free lookout) *Blow Hole (free lookout) *Tessellated Pavement (free lookout) * Doo Town . Small town where all the houses are named with DOO in them. * Tasman sea charters *Good Thing Fishing Trips. Excellent Fishing here. *Lufra Hotel. *Officers mess café. If possible to go on a boat charter, it would be well worth the time. Excellent rugged coastland, big caves, plenty of sea life, truly a magical experience. Fishing is also fantastic out here with plenty of big fish in the area. |
