PORT ARTHUR . See life through a convict's eye. Settlement in Port Arthur first began in 1830, and soon became a convict's worst night mare, for more than 12500 convicts. Petty crimes such as stealing a loaf of bread could have seen you sentenced to transportation. This meant a long and traitorous journey across Bass Straight and most likely to Port Arthur . The convicts were slaves, who were treated poorly and punishment was brutal. The establishment was in operation for 47 years, of hard work and torture to convicts. Over the time, one of there greatest feats was the completion of the granary in 1844. at the time it was the largest building in Australia . It was powered by a giant 24 man treadmill. After a decade of use, it was changed to house 513 prisoners, in 136 cells and dormitories. The remains of the building are still standing. * Port Arthur historic Village. *Island of the dead. * Port Arthur ghost tour * Port Arthur caravan park. *Remarkable Caves *Tasman golf club |
