SALT WATER RIVER . Hidden treasure of the Tasman Peninsula . At Saltwater River there were two penal stations established. One was the farming of food, to supply Port Arthur and other outstations on the peninsula. The other was the mining of coal, which was regarded as "hell on earth". Working at the mines was a form of punishment to the convicts. There cells were very small and had no light. They were the most horrific example of penal life in Australia . *visiting the ruins (Free) There are no shops at saltwater river or accommodation. The sites are as spectacular as those of Port Arthur with out the crowd. Lots of warning signs around the mines so take note and pay attention. |
